Vietnam War Game

EDT 512
Rules and Directions

Objective:
The objective of this game is for students to get an understanding of the events of the Vietnam War, by answering questions about the political, social, and war aspects of the War.
Overview:
In this game you are in Vietnam and the year is 1970. As the player you will take on the role of a Connecticut Vietnam Veteran. You will deploy to Vietnam (the start point on the game board) and work your way through the country using the designated path. When you land on key points (squares with pentagons) you will be required to return to the United States. You must correctly answer a question of your opponents choosing before you can return to Vietnam and continue on the route through the country. The first player to reach the aircraft and return home is the winner of the game.
Setup:
- Board of Vietnam/U.S.
- Veteran game tokens (6 each)
- Veteran cards
- Three sets of question cards. One red set for Political, one blue set for Homefront and one yellow set for the conflict itself.
- Each card has a QR code. The player can use this code to research the answer. This is for informational purposes only. You cannot use the QR code as a source for answering the question.
- One Dice
Starting the game:
  1. 1. Player will choose a game piece and veteran card from the amount provided. Each game piece is a representation of a Connecticut veteran from the war, with a respective rank.
  2. 2. Each player will place their game piece on the start tile. The students will roll the dice to see who rolls the highest for start order. (In the event of a tie, those two students will re-role for order)
  3. 3. The player with the highest roll with go first, and the order will go clockwise.
Gameplay:
  1. 1. Each student will roll the dice. Whatever number the dice lands on, the student will move that many spaces. The player will land on a colored space:
    1. a. A colored space will prompt the player to pick up a matching colored card from the board.
    2. b. A question will be on the card matching to the category the color is associated with.
i. The player will have to answer the question correctly to roll and move ahead on their next turn. The player to their right will read the question to them.
ii. Answer the question wrong and the player is stuck on that space until they answer a question correctly on their next turn.
iii. Once the player finally answers a question right, they have to wait until their next turn to be able to roll and move again.

  1. 2. When a player lands on a pentagon space, their token moves to the United States board and the opponent to their left chooses a category card of their choosing.
    1. a. If the answering player answers the question right, they move back to the obstacle tile on the “war” part of the board and can roll and move on their next turn.
    2. b. If the answering player answers the question wrong, they have to wait in the U.S. board until their next turn.
i. On their next turn they must answer the question right, or they will face the possibility of getting stuck on that board. They keep answering questions until they answer a question correctly. (see Gameplay 2, section A for correct answer movement)

  1. 3. Finishing the game:
    1. a. To win the game, the players have to reach the end of the board. Players can reach the end of the board by answering questions right each time they land on a category tile, or by making long rolls consistently.
    2. b. The player with the least amount of questions answered incorrectly will win the game.
    3. c. Once you get to the end, you have to roll the exact of amount of spaces to win the game. If you do not roll the correct amount, you stay on your tile until your next turn.

  1. 4. Strategies:
    1. a. As a player, you should observe the questions your opponents have trouble with. If your opponent lands on an obstacle tile, you can choose the category they have had a rough time with throughout the game. This can help you understand answers, and make them get better at the topic.
    2. b. You can make alliances as players so that if you do land on an obstacle tile, your opponent and you can work together.
